Difference Between Fashion Retailing and Fashion Merchandising

The fashion industry has been rising at an unbelievable pace. There are many people taking fashion not as a hobby but as a career option. There are bountiful options to choose when a person opts to follow or join the fashion industry. While talking about fashion, there are many questions and confusions that arise. One such question is the confusion between fashion retailing and fashion merchandising.

Distinguishing features between fashion retailing and fashion merchandising
There are many differences between both of these fashion designing courses. These are listed below:

    1. The scope of study: the fashion retailing program enables a student to display, market and sell fashion products. The fashion merchandising program prepares a student for evaluating the fashion needs and converting these needs to meet customer’s requirements.

    2. Career options: the fashion retailer student can pursue a career in visual merchandising, retail sales, and retail management. The fashion merchandiser can have variable career options such as fashion buyer, fashion director, product development manager, fashion director, divisional merchandise manager.

    3. Income expectations: the people working in fashion retailing earn good sums of money. However, a person working in retail merchandising earns higher than a person working in fashion retailing. This is because of the difference in job positions and roles of a fashion merchandiser and fashion retailer.

    4. Sale: the fashion retailer boosts outside sales whereas a fashion merchandiser boosts in-store sales.

Overall, the fashion retailing and fashion merchandising are two absolutely varied fields which provide different exposure and have a different area of work. At the same time, both of these are interdependent and inter-linked to each other so much so that they are complementary to each other.
